I've gotten into some things that I've been avoiding for some time. I made it through the process without signing up for Facebook!!!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>I discovered a few new apps that are really fun and came across one or two that I was already familiar with. This was pretty good timing for doing this <i>thing</i> for work since I received a new iPad for Christmas.<br />
<br />
One of my favorite apps I discovered through this. <i>Apps Gone Free </i>is an app I check daily. It's become sort of an addiction.<br />
<br />
I really liked reading some of the tweets at #23ThingsMN. I learned some interesting thing through it.<br />
<br />
I didn't realize what CEUs were or that you could get 23 of them (that's a lot!) until I was a way through this. I don't think I would qualify for CEUs though, so I'm not sweating this.<br />
<br />
I have shared some of the things I've learned with my coworkers and was very excited to learn some tricks to make my Google more effective.Booking Lost Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02352941402823424049noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-107323905494722374.post-4395439738007478382014-06-06T07:08:00.000-05:002014-06-07T16:42:18.738-05:00Discover Another App in Thing 22<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's not hard to fall in love with <i>Apps Gone Free</i>. Everyday there are new apps you can get at no cost. In case of a missed day there is also the ability to go back and see if the previous few days' apps are still free. If it isn't an "EXPIRED" above the price it's still free!</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are some interesting games, art programs, utility, and other apps that fall into a variety of categories. You can discover things that you didn't know existed. Sometimes multiple apps get downloaded and other days not one.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Quixey got a quick glance also. It did not impress with it's results for iPad.</div>

<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">There are tons of great apps out there. You just have to know what your looking for. Many of them you don't know you need them until they are on your device.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
Checking <i>Apps Gone Free</i> shows how wide a variety of apps are available. Previous posts, especially hobbies and games, have already hit on some of the favorites. Here are some other apps that I like to use or would find useful in a library setting:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4rDPQRVGuT4E5oU5YF00l8s9KH94WqzXxizWo-yqG46AcPYWRdeqaSNf2XmBfj3vC1YJ-gJNA1XtRJr1V9opUrIAL6sINqFwuQic9vrnThWXzOyIiqTZHVxjRXy5pFRgEKs4UqDCqm0s/s640/blogger-image--2028537637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="60" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4rDPQRVGuT4E5oU5YF00l8s9KH94WqzXxizWo-yqG46AcPYWRdeqaSNf2XmBfj3vC1YJ-gJNA1XtRJr1V9opUrIAL6sINqFwuQic9vrnThWXzOyIiqTZHVxjRXy5pFRgEKs4UqDCqm0s/s640/blogger-image--2028537637.jpg" width="60" /></a></div>

<b>Plus One - A Nice Tally Counter</b></div>

<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/plus-one-a-nice-tally-counter/id322878151?mt=8">
</a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This app could be very helpful for keeping track of how many people show up for an event or program. It could also record how many questions are asked in a given period.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<br />
<b>PBS for iPad</b><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjICZgThy_BKe7PITVVjMn23_vBmQ0Waxk35I1nI3Ir_bQnwU6pr72fdk3X3C_H8y6zTIgyBQ49CLqp7hjcgbw_2XtacH7myFf4FxSF_LvR5zTU9XKDJ1ErxSoGf6VngN1Z5K2j6CUvQA/s640/blogger-image--303875230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="80" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjICZgThy_BKe7PITVVjMn23_vBmQ0Waxk35I1nI3Ir_bQnwU6pr72fdk3X3C_H8y6zTIgyBQ49CLqp7hjcgbw_2XtacH7myFf4FxSF_LvR5zTU9XKDJ1ErxSoGf6VngN1Z5K2j6CUvQA/s640/blogger-image--303875230.jpg" width="80" /></a>It's another app that is great to have. It allows you to watch shows that were missed or re-watch segments that you couldn't watch or need more details on. If you sign up with them there are more options available to you. You can see what is on your local station, list your favorites for easier access, and check out other programs that are related to what you like to watch. PBS has more apps that depend on your likes and needs; there is the PBS Newshour app and many apps for kids.<br />

One of the new favorite time wasters is <i>Farm Heroes Saga</i>. <i>Farm Heroes</i> is from the makers of <i>Candy Crush</i>, <a href="http://king.com/">King.com</a>. As of early June I was up to the 90s in concurring levels. It's a game that takes spacial recognition, planning several moves out, and patience.<br />

Different Minion costumes provide a variety of different powers or power up bonuses. My favorite costume that is currently in the roster is the <i>Mom</i> costume. It makes most of the power ups last longer, giving you more time with that power.</div>

If a player is paying attention there are a lot of humorous things going on in the game. One of the screens while the game is updating says "Deleting the color yellow. Re-installing the color yellow."<br />

One game that I'm hoping will become free for a few days so I can grab it is <i>Bookworm</i>. Having played it on someone else's iPad it was very enjoyable, frustrating, and fun.</div>

They have a lot of freebies on the site, too. They have Free Mini-Classes in practically every category. They also have a great blog with tips and ideas. There are free patterns available for a variety of projects. There is a projects area where you can post your project or look for ideas.<br />

The <a href="http://www.craftsy.com/apps" target="_blank">app</a> has the same features as the regular website (note-taking, bookmarking, etc.). <i><b>Minnesota 511</b></i> is an app put out by MnDOT. It shows places drivers might have problems on the road that day. In the winter the roads are different colors to show the condition of that particular highway. There are various symbols that represent what is going on at that incident. It could be a road closure for construction, an accident, watch for debris on the road, etc. A mixture of Minnesota agencies contribute to this app. The two most common are MnDOT and the Minnesota State Patrol. <br />

<a name='more'></a><br />
There are a lot of categories available for users to choose from. This seems to have a lot of British/UK shows from what was previewed. <br />
<br />
It was quite easy to record & post a "boo." Just hit record and it looks like there is ten minutes available to record on. Then using Twitter to sign on with it was easy to add the boo to the upload que.<br />
<br />
This was another hard <i>thing</i> to do in a library setting. As suggested in <i>Thing 16</i> it could be used for short reports but I'm not sure how to use this one in a more rural library setting.Booking Lost Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02352941402823424049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-107323905494722374.post-73524371810803163742014-06-06T07:00:00.000-05:002014-06-07T16:28:06.627-05:00Get Dramatic with Thing 15: Infographics<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Infographics was fun but a bit of a challenge.</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The ability to create an infographic for this <i>thing</i> was not going to happen. Viz was only available in the full version, which was free, but it wasn't compatible with the iPad's most current version of software. iVi Touch Lite might be better in the paid version; more options would make it much smoother to use. The biggest problem was the inability to change the layers' position. It might have been better with a stylus.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
info.Graphics app was the most interesting of the other apps tried. It was still having issues; the app was slow and closed down a time or two the day it was tried.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are some very informative and useful infographics out there. The infographic on this page taught me about using the <i>~</i> to get broader results in Google. It was not possible to get the infographic directly from the app to add to this page. I had to search out the source (<a href="http://collegehack.com/" target="_blank">collegehack.com</a>), to get a clear picture that could be re-sized. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's kind of hard to do thing with volume when you are working the front desk of the library.<br />
<i></i><br />
I ran across a new app from Adobe called <i>Voice</i>. They term it as a video app so that is what I'm going with. It is an easy app to use. To start out title your idea, and pick out a structure to use. All that is needed is to record something; this determines the length of time the image is shown. You can use an icon they provide, a photo from a variety of places, or use text. There is background music provided and you can change the theme to something that appeals..<br />
<br />
I can see this as being a good web tool for libraries. It can be short and to the point and uses very bold graphics.Booking Lost Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02352941402823424049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-107323905494722374.post-7344999230923810102014-05-23T07:00:00.000-05:002014-05-23T07:00:08.133-05:00Creations for Thing 13: Presentations<h3 style="text-align: justify;">

<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The iPad app seems to have more options right now than the web page. A user can choose between free and paid options for different elements in the Haiku Deck. Besides the appearance of endless pictures and backgrounds, there is limited options for layout and font choices. This cuts down significantly on decision making time. The amount of information allowed on a slide is limited also. </span></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The web support is awesome and the many questions I had in using this app were easily answered there. There are at least eleven different lists, including, <i>Readers' Choice, Teens' Top Ten, </i>and <i>Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers</i>. Under the search function there is the option to search by <i>Title, Author, Genre, Year, Award, and Booklist.</i> It is odd how the authors are alphabetized. There seem not to be much logic in the author sorting. Here is an example from the middle of the "T" list: <br />
<ul>
<li><i>Tupelo Hassmann </i></li>
<li><i>Terry Pratchett</i></li>
<li><i>Tamora Pierce</i></li>
<li><i>Terry Trueman</i></li>
<li><i>Tanya Lee Stone </i></li>
</ul>
It could use a little more streamlining and updating. A lot of the authors and titles come up as "not found" (at least on the day of this writing). A better sorting option would be nice; a way to sort for or out graphic novels would be a great feature, too. I have looked something up on <i>Teen Book Finder</i> and then taken the scant information to Amazon to get more details. Once the quirks are figured out, this is an OK app.Booking Lost Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02352941402823424049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-107323905494722374.post-1260240147073188432014-05-02T07:00:00.000-05:002014-05-05T13:47:16.130-05:00Your Reference Preference for Thing 11<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

Zinio is among our library's digital offerings. It is a pretty neat way to access magazines. The magazines stay in your account unless you remove the them from it. Using a computer a user can "check out" a magazine from the library's Zinio page.

The screen captures above, from the February/March 2014 issue of <i>Organic Gardening,</i> show one of the features this magazine allows. The center image is just like the page from print version of <i>Organic Gardening</i>. If the <b>Text</b> button is pressed a the bottom of the page it becomes like the image on the left; text with no graphics. If you need larger print you can enlarge the text like the image on the right. To go back to the original click the <b>Page</b> button at the bottom.</div>

<a name='more'></a> <br />
Snapchat could be a fun tool for libraries to use. It seems a little more secure than other instant picture sharing sites.<br />
<br />
This could be turned into a game for teens or community members. There could be a variation of a memory like game where images relating to a book or topic are flashed throughout the day. A teen could send in an answer as soon as they guessed the title or topic. Badges for a social media site could be a prize or a drawing at the end of the month or prize period for a local gift certificate or business sponsored prize.<br />
<br />
A library could also team up with a local group or chamber of commerce. This would be especially fun during a community wide event. The library could send out pictures of historical places around town or close up pictures of pictures or items in their collection and people could try to guess the building or local topic. A little cross promotion never hurt.Booking Lost Timehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02352941402823424049noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-107323905494722374.post-35574415180144150512014-04-18T07:02:00.000-05:002014-04-18T07:02:00.277-05:00It's All Fine for Thing 9<div style="text-align: justify;">
This was a fun <i>Thing</i> to do. Editing photographs is something everyone tries to do at one time or another.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFt5390KpgyiVFhiKin5wrv-rh7fVKZu2KW-5xnmSueNOITMjzzoj2BSgg9Eg3ApJM1Iq99LMWt6RzaakDBsX8ExDw453mcpl2JlGwGj6KzK1PHLjYmfO0wyVT5hGARIJIV5Lp_FxmXw/s640/blogger-image--669600183.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Color Splurge screen shot" border="0" height="80" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPFt5390KpgyiVFhiKin5wrv-rh7fVKZu2KW-5xnmSueNOITMjzzoj2BSgg9Eg3ApJM1Iq99LMWt6RzaakDBsX8ExDw453mcpl2JlGwGj6KzK1PHLjYmfO0wyVT5hGARIJIV5Lp_FxmXw/s640/blogger-image--669600183.jpg" title="Color Splurge screen shot" width="80" /></a>Color Splurge is what got picked off of the list provided in <i>Thing 9</i>. This would have been a great app to have earlier in the year. In a display, there was a black and white photo where we wanted to highlight some of the signs. This would have been a much better option than jury-rigging something in Paint. I do have a concern about resizing pictures after editing them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pictures can be selected from a variety of places. For this <i>Thing</i> pictures were tried from pictures e-mailed to me and the occasional picture taken. You can zoom in to get the details and you can recolor to change the picture. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVjhyEPn8N1vFWTgaYYi45JQHG022_4ca1hbBeYMVyeNxSCclk0goAfUmlt3_OUPoCzhPrbp_o3CwSQk64LM1WT6wVASFhbblIuZvvoicCL4_MQPwhxiGSsK5JBvAf5jccpXaAMWL8J1Y/s640/blogger-image--1246877692.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="My photo edited in Color Splurge." border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVjhyEPn8N1vFWTgaYYi45JQHG022_4ca1hbBeYMVyeNxSCclk0goAfUmlt3_OUPoCzhPrbp_o3CwSQk64LM1WT6wVASFhbblIuZvvoicCL4_MQPwhxiGSsK5JBvAf5jccpXaAMWL8J1Y/s1600/blogger-image--1246877692.jpg" title="My photo edited in Color Splurge." /></a></div>
The detail needed to control the color application is yet another reason to breakdown and purchase a stylus. </div>

I believe it is a free app. PicCells or something similar is a welcome addition to photo editing abilities. It comes with many free templates with the ability to purchase more. For a blogger or possible display purposes this is a great way to show a group of photos in one area. Check out the three Snoopy cartoons from the opening of one of my iPad games on the right. I am not impressed with the quality or ability of re-sized pictures in PicCells. It probably is just my unfamiliarity
with photo editing that causes this problem.<br />
<br />
One program or an app, I am looking for is something that will help me get better quality photos in this blog. I can re-size (especially getting smaller graphics) with the height and width tag in my html coding. It would be so much easier to have a program that would do this automatically.<br />
<br />
In this thing it was great being introduced to the recoloring app. I will be using it in the future.</div>

Still trying to abstain from joining up with more social media. This blog <i>thing </i>is sure messing with <i>that </i>goal.<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more"></a><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since one of the requirements of this <i>thing</i> was being on some social media, Twitter got picked as the social media to be on and HootSuite was selected as the social media tool to check out.<br />
<br />
First off twitter is something that my head still needs to be wrapped around. I randomly picked some of my favorite TV shows/characters/movie genres to follow just to see how this works. I did find this cool event via Twitter:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl4mHn_UdvO30hgEUJ1JvpEfP5jZ8cr-doVwlIBF0H6dc6UjKGXdwyBnsa2nzysP4UtZxt9bme653wovnLQ1udL0E8Am4ab2O1akYFVU5nWzoqToPj_jPaxAHpJnuoXgra40LHby2WdVI/s1600/blogger-image-1822282655.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl4mHn_UdvO30hgEUJ1JvpEfP5jZ8cr-doVwlIBF0H6dc6UjKGXdwyBnsa2nzysP4UtZxt9bme653wovnLQ1udL0E8Am4ab2O1akYFVU5nWzoqToPj_jPaxAHpJnuoXgra40LHby2WdVI/s640/blogger-image-1822282655.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
There is a Pinterest board and a Facebook page for it. If you sign up for the mailing list they will send you a media packet.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
I can see the advantage of using something like HootSuite, too. There is a big plus with seeing all our social media on one screen and using some of the cool features like scheduled posting. I have been doing that in <i>Blogger </i>for these blog posts. You can preplan posts for an event or to cover time when you are away from your computer, like a vacation.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
For an individual or organization that has a social media presence this is a good app to use. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Pinterest is a very good resource for libraries. Pinterest has some truly good display ideas and themes that a library could inspire them in their own setting. I particularly like the Monopoly themed pin in image 1. All you have to do search for "library displays" or "seasonal library" and the marvelous ideas can really galvanize the creative spirit.</div>

catches library patrons' attention. The blackboard in the picture with
all the blue books says,</div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq">
"I Don't Remember the title,<br />

It can be pretty cool seeing how different people interpret the same idea. Even before joining Pinterest our library had a similar theme going this year in the display cabinet of "April Showers Bring May Flowers," like the center pin in image 3 but with books.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a great resource for librarians when a display needs to be changed and the creative juices are going "duh." Just checking out what other people are doing for their library or that time of year can inspire you to create something great.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I can also see boards being made available to the public that would tie into programs or displays the library is showcasing. </div>

I can see myself spending masses of time on this site. As a person who goes off on tangents, I can find myself on a thoroughly different topic, a far piece from where the starting point was. This could be a prodigious time squanderer. The ability to organize topics on "boards" to your liking is wonderful. One outstanding feature is all the different ways pictures can be uploaded to Pinterest. One of my favorite things to search for on Pinterest is different kinds of cake and the various ways to decorate them. The best cake, so far, is the rainbow cake on the right. It is so bright and cheery and fairly simple looking to make.</div>

After picking Bamboo Paper and Springpad from the choices and downloading to my iPad, here's a quick review.</div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">display cabinet idea</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://bamboopaper.wacom.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Bamboo Paper</a> was a very easy app to download and get started in. It has very intuitive functions. The ability to create multiple books and pages is great. All the ideas and sketches can go in one place. The free app can be expanded by purchasing items in the app.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As shown in the picture to the right, with only a few days practice, the sketch is very preschoolsque but adequate to help with the display cabinet. Bamboo could work better if a stylus was used. This is a great way to show a colleague a quick sketch (<i>color, too!</i>) without wasting paper. It also is good to use on the days that the onscreen keyboard is giving you fits.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_iyS8JT5H8RftJWKZ0EzQaOYMLx2QCVjpk7rrEoOhap2Ehlo2orYu1mpK3CEcoqWhqc19YGPLo3SEElrEA9FkDO0mqZrbc9H1eDqJ_SwyNdKhOfHH28tgs-DIatdIVCEHqU445bojzeg/s640/blogger-image--1778940728.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Springpad Icon Screenshot" border="0" height="85" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_iyS8JT5H8RftJWKZ0EzQaOYMLx2QCVjpk7rrEoOhap2Ehlo2orYu1mpK3CEcoqWhqc19YGPLo3SEElrEA9FkDO0mqZrbc9H1eDqJ_SwyNdKhOfHH28tgs-DIatdIVCEHqU445bojzeg/s640/blogger-image--1778940728.jpg" title="Springpad Icon" width="85" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://springpad.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Springpad</a> has some great features. It took a little bit of effort to get it to work but once it was installed the Web Clipper made saving webpages a snap. It was pretty easy to do on multiple devices, too. I was able to set it up on my <a href="https://springpad.com/api/users/me/iphone/clipper" target="_blank">iPad's Safari</a> and a laptop's FireFox browser letting me save from both platforms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfcXEbEewdP3nFrFgXUizsv-omnoF9oXP6cMpgZC1Jpff1Md7abVfF7SJxYOJ2LC34YpLbIRT2eJx7-ntIiBvMg_TBn212d3tNC6YKMCZTPwDdfS_NffjWOAjj-foUxL_v1jnkeDBoXA8/s640/blogger-image-675038752.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Springpad Checklist Screencapture" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfcXEbEewdP3nFrFgXUizsv-omnoF9oXP6cMpgZC1Jpff1Md7abVfF7SJxYOJ2LC34YpLbIRT2eJx7-ntIiBvMg_TBn212d3tNC6YKMCZTPwDdfS_NffjWOAjj-foUxL_v1jnkeDBoXA8/s640/blogger-image-675038752.jpg" title="Springpad Checklist Screencapture" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This app could be very helpful in a work setting. If a group project or large event is scheduled this could let multiple people work on one or multiple projects without duplicating work or missing an item.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The variety of items Springpad makes available is excellent. For a group project you can have Notes, Bookmarks, Tasks, Files, and Checklists. It is really simple to change the order of items in a checklist on my iPad. Just drag the three lines up or down to move the item.<br />
<br />
<i><span style="color: red;">Update:</span></i><span style="color: red;"><span style="color: black;"> Springpad will be shutting down in June 2014.</span></span> </div>

The choices for <i>Thing 4. Keeping Up</i> were a bit lacking for me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
After googling "Flipboard vs. Zite" to get a little background on both, <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flipboard-your-social-news/id358801284?mt=8" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Flipboard</a> was up first. It downloaded OK and the sign up process was easy enough. After picking a few topics and adding a couple specific feeds, I was able to start browsing. It was pretty easy to set up my own magazines to pick organize articles to keep after reading some interesting ones.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After playing with Flipboard for awhile the "wow" factor still hadn't hit me and decided to give <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/zite/id419752338?mt=8" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Zite</a> a whirl. Right away the format was better suited to me than Flipboard. It was much easier to tell the app which articles I liked and it caught on to my interests much quicker. However, Flipboard's stream seemed more update and complete than Zite.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While good in theory, and both apps had their strong points, neither app was a very good fit for me. One of the major drawbacks of both apps was that there could have been more on each page. Flipping the page so often got old after a while. If what I liked about each app could be combined into one program and more on a page, it might turn into a decent app.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie3jylGUsiYb5AzYq0RG3xgPz8p-Hekt4_1lXvJ_g8jJzZgWdqFi_5HHNgkm8ZuD6Dd-OUsa3yYsdChzAmmjCmxo_2uA5eysZz4DBYEB2IPpqvCBGtQduN1s_qMMUNfwnpK-4sY3xcCgU/s1600/pocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="pocket app" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie3jylGUsiYb5AzYq0RG3xgPz8p-Hekt4_1lXvJ_g8jJzZgWdqFi_5HHNgkm8ZuD6Dd-OUsa3yYsdChzAmmjCmxo_2uA5eysZz4DBYEB2IPpqvCBGtQduN1s_qMMUNfwnpK-4sY3xcCgU/s1600/pocket.jpg" height="88" title="pocket app screen capture" width="86" /></a>I did run across one app that was helpful while googling for information. If Zite had been just a little more to my taste, using <a href="https://getpocket.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Pocket</a> would have made it a great app. It allows you to save articles to reador refer back to later. It works in Safari, Flipboard, and Zite on the iPad. It also works when it got added to Foxfire on the laptop. I'll need more time to play with this app but so far it seems to be a great <i>thing.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I can see good ways for libraries to use Flipboard and Zite. This would be a great way to share interesting, important, or just to update the whole system information with online.</div>

Many of the apps featured in <i>Thing 3</i> will have more options in a larger city. Being a rural dweller the apps are pretty bare bones when they are turned on at home.<br />

Being spoiled, they and all of their friends have Wi-Fi in their homes up here. When they stayed with some friends in Arizona they were very surprised not to have Wi-Fi in the house. If they had called this it would have been so much easier to find the nearest free Wi-Fi.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<u><i>Free Wi-Fi Finder</i></u> would be a great app to recommend to people who come into the library to research upcoming trips. It could also be good way to pull people into the library.</div>

The alarm got set for a Saturday so the normal alarm could be left alone. It didn't go off <i>that</i> Saturday. The next weekend we were trying to figure out where that weird beeping was coming from since it finally went off. It also wasn't the easiest app to figure out right after opening. It probably didn't help that it was after midnight during the first use.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since I'm currently not a big social media person, the ability to have <u>iHome Sleep</u> update you on what was posted overnight is lost on me. Not being a news junkie, the news doesn't need to be checked first thing in the morning either. If a sleep schedule was trying to be adjusted or tracked this might be a handy app. I'll stick to my current alarm since I know it works and I wasn't impressed by the alarm choices <u>iHome Sleep</u> gave me.</div>

If someone has time to search the App store you can find a lot of helpful <i>things</i> for your day to day life.</div>
